It isn’t the most modern of brothels and the building definitely needs some attention but there is a good selection of women working here. Street Prostitutes & Red Light Districts
Prior to the 1970s, Cologne used to have several red-light areas but the city authorities made an attempt to condense sex work by authorising the building of two high-rise brothels. Situated on Hornstrasse, these two brothels still exist today with Pascha retaining its title as the biggest brothel in Europe (see ‘Brothels’, above).
In 2001, further measures were introduced to discourage street prostitution and the city built a “sex drive-in”, or “Verrichtungsbox”. Consisting of a series of shelters, the facilities were designed for hookers to service clients in their cars. There are wash facilities on site as well as panic buttons and welfare services.
Individual ‘sex boxes’ are screened by tall wooden fences but the area has a gated entry with security cameras. You can find the dive in ‘performance boxes’ on Geestemünder Straße in an industrial area to the north of the city. Hookers charge between $30 and $50 for sex in your car and you can simply drive up and pick a prostitute.
The booths are designed so the driver must park close to the left hand wall so he cannot leave the vehicle. An alarm and safe area is available to the right of the box so that hookers can exit the vehicle and get to a place of safety if they feel the need.
Both the drive-ins and super-brothels have largely been successful and the city has fewer street prostitutes although there are some areas where you can still pick up in the traditional way. Kölnberg has a reputation for cheap street hookers who will provide full service for just €10.
