Berlin is filthy. Filthy, fabulous, and free… and nowhere is that better embodied than at the infamous KitKatClub.
This venue has a reputation that stretches across Europe as one of Germany’s top adult party destinations. KitKat is known for its popular techno and trance music, its ability to attract top DJs, and perhaps more widely… for some of the most sexually uninhibited parties on the planet. It famously allows sex on its premises.
Planning a visit? In this guide, we’ll cover everything you need to know about KitKatClub Berlin: from its wild origins and iconic theme nights to dress code rules, the music, the door policy, and what kind of crowd you’ll be dancing (or shagging) beside.
30 Years of Sex, Dance and Trance
The KitKatClub burst onto Berlin’s underground scene in 1994, the brainchild of Austrian porn filmmaker Simon Thaur and his partner Kirsten Krüger.
They set out to create a no-holds-barred haven for self-expression, inspired by the anything-goes spirit of Weimar-era cabarets (the club’s very name nods to the nightclub in the musical Cabaret).
In its early days, KitKatClub hosted modest mid-’90s fetish parties that struggled to draw crowds. In fact, legend has it the first few parties had only a couple dozen curious souls wandering in.
Check out the queues today and it’s clear: Berlin’s wild at heart could barely be contained for long.
After a few “be careful what you wish for” moments, word-of-mouth spread that this club allowed actual sex on the dance floor… and suddenly KitKat went from sparsely attended to absolutely notorious both here and across Europe.
Over the years, it has moved four times: first from Glogauer Straße to Neues Schauspielhaus at Nollendorfplatz (one of Germany’s top nightlife districts), then to Schöneberg in Bessemer Straße, and finally to the Mitte district.
The club is now located at Köpenicker Str. 76, 10179, Berlin, right in the heart of the city’s central district.
It is close to rival clubbing behemoths Insomnia, Tresor and Berghain, making this part of Berlin one of the hottest electronic clubbing destinations in Europe.
A Hub of Hedonism and ‘Anything Goes‘ Parties
The name Kit Kat Club originated in the 18th century as a reference to a liberal political society in old England.
Kit Kat Club was also the name of the scandalous Berlin nightclub featured in the American musical Cabaret. Here it was depicted as a burlesque theatre of the 1930s, a frivolous venue at odds with the rise to power of the Nazi party.
Well, if Berlin nightlife is a circus, KitKatClub is its erotic center ring.
The club earned its infamy through fetish parties, erotic circus-themed nights, and a famously open sexual environment. Its flagship event is the weekly CarneBall Bizarre, a Saturday-night costume kink extravaganza where party-goers bust out latex, leather, or lingerie… often under the approving eye of co-founder Kirsten acting as a style gatekeeper.
Wednesdays feature parties like Symbiotika, among the more hardcore fetish nights; show up without at least a harness or some shiny PVC and you can expect a polite “not tonight” from the door staff.
Yep, it’s strictly not for the vanilla riff-raff!
There are a couple of nights where the mood is somewhat more… gentle, and you might get in with just a t-shirt!, but those are certainly not the nights that KitKat has become famed for.
It is known for its explicit casual encounters, with full sex allowed at the venue (although not quite as openly practised as it once was), similar to what you’d find in an FKK Club or one of Berlin’s many brothels… just without the transactional element. Well, in most cases!
Revellers from all over Europe flock here to absorb the intoxicating combination of pounding dance music, fancy costumes, or lack thereof, and a friendly, liberal, international crowd.
The venue itself is full of surprises.
Once you’re through the door, the fun begins.
The club is split into several zones:
- A main dance floor, thumping with techno and trance
- A lounge area with a bar and seating
- A pool and small open-air courtyard
- The infamous dark rooms, where clothing tends to fuck off completely
Upstairs, downstairs, sideways — you’ll find kinky surprises and erotic delights. There’s dirty art on the walls, swings hanging from beams, and a pretty epic light show.
We’re talking an all-out attack on the senses, not just your pants.
Rise of a Berlin Institution
Over the decades, KitKatClub has transcended mere nightclub status to become something of a cultural landmark in Berlin. A strange living symbol of the city’s anything-goes attitude.
Never has this been more evident than when the grand old venue was threatened by developers in 2019.
A swarm of public outcry and political support surged to “save” the club as a vital piece of Berlin’s culture.
The city eventually granted the venue protected cultural status… a recognition usually reserved for theatres, museums, and other “respectable” institutions.
But anyone who’s ever danced half-naked on that glow-in-the-dark dancefloor knows: KitKat deserves a place in the cultural pantheon.
I mean, how many clubs can claim to be equal parts hedonistic rave, social experiment, and living erotic art installation?
A Night at KitKat: What to Expect
So, you’ve decided to take the plunge into KitKatClub’s world.
What can you expect (aside from leaving a bit more lightly clothed than you arrived)?
First, the door experience: you’ll queue up outside a brightly decorated entrance, likely behind a mix of goth-looking techno kids, middle-aged couples in BDSM gear, and international party tourists adjusting their fishnets.
There a famously stern but savvy bouncer will size up your outfit and your attitude. Don’t even try taking photos – the club has a strict no-phone, no-camera policy; you’ll be asked to seal your phone camera or check your device at the coat check as soon as you’re inside.
And once you’re inside, it will become clear why!
Once past the gatekeepers, you’ll find that everyone inside is surprisingly welcoming. KitKat’s crowd, despite their fierce looks, are generally respectful and open-minded…they have to be, given the things they see! The atmosphere is one of collective freedom.
KitKat spans multiple levels and rooms in a somewhat maze-like arrangement. You’ll likely start in the main dance floor, a cavernous space pulsing with high-end sound where DJs spin dark, pounding techno and trance.
Above the bar hangs a giant cat’s head sculpture with glowing red eyes, ominously watching the dancefloor romp…
The decor hits you immediately: fluorescent murals of erotic art cover the walls, lit by ultraviolet lights, giving the whole place a surreal, psychedelic feel.
Don’t be surprised if the bartenders are topless and splattered in body paint and glitter; KitKat staff often dress as minimally as the patrons.
Adjacent to the main room is a large lounge area with plush sofas (easy to wipe clean… you get the idea) and a second bar. This lounge looks out onto a small swimming pool in a courtyard type area.
Downstairs or on upper levels, you’ll find various nooks and crannies: a second dance area, plus the infamous darkrooms/playrooms accessible via a metal staircase. This is where things get really s-e-x-u-a-l.
These are spaces outfitted with beds or mats and equipment for when dancing transitions into… pretty much what you’d expect.
Anyone can wander in, but the etiquette is to only participate or watch if invited… consent and respect are absolute musts, as they have to be in a venue like this.
Throughout the night, you’ll encounter all sorts of frolicking: people openly having sex on couches or in the chill-out areas. You’ll probably also notice that the crowd is diverse in age, body type, and orientation – young or old, skinny or fat, gay, straight or in-between – it just doesn’t matter, and no one cares.
What happens at KitKat stays at KitKat!
Who Goes to KitKatClub Berlin?
The club is open to all genders, preferences and tastes.
Three decades in, it’s still drawing packed crowds every week… from techno purists and art school weirdos to swingers, queers, and tourists who “just wanted to take a look” and left minus their underwear.
And what a look it is.
The typical clientele is a mix of straight and gay dance music fans, across all the ages; but mostly under 40.
Many young tourists come here to sample one of Berlin’s most infamous institutions.
Blacklight murals of erotic nymphs pulse to the beat. A red-eyed cat sculpture looms over the main room like a horny guardian. Naked bodies slither through fog and sweat, occasionally pausing for a smoke or a shag in the lounge. There’s a pool. There’s a playroom.
And there’s always an almighty queue to get inside the bloody place…
Don’t Miss: The CarneBall Bizarre
KitKatClub holds the weekly CarneBall Bizarre every Saturday.
This is a notorious party where the club comes to life with wave after wave of techno and trance music. The club gets incredibly busy, packed, and sweaty, and you never really know what—or who—you’re going to bump into next.
The CarneBall Bizarre is known for merging several different dress themes into a party that could best be described as “Anything Goes.“
The KitKatClub has three dancefloors and an outdoor area that will all be found heaving on Saturday nights. Fetish-wear, nurse uniforms, bondage gear, TV celebrity fantasies…
Seriously, you have to see it to believe it.
CarneBall lasts long in to the morning, before the afterhour ‘Piep Show’ takes over on Sunday.
If you’re going to put any KKClub night on your bucket list, we suggest it be this one. 😉
Other Music and Theme Nights
Besides the weekly staple of CarneBall, KitKatClub has a number of themed nights that you should definitely check before attending the club.
Why is it a good idea to check?
Because let’s face it: some fetishes are not for everybody.
If you’re expecting jovial uniforms and friendly banter, but you turn up to BDSM night with chains at the ready — well, you get the idea!
KitKatClub holds such a diverse mix of events that you should really check ahead and ensure you like the sound of what you’re getting in to.
Fridays tend to be a closer and more intimate experience. This is when KitKatClub teams up with various scene activists to promote unique gatherings.
There is also Electric Monday to watch out for. There’s no special dress code here, just a selection of deep house, techno and electro music. A pulsating start to the week.
Getting To The Club
KitKatClub is located at Köpenicker Straße 76, in Berlin’s central Mitte district. The nearest U-Bahn station is Heinrich-Heine-Straße (U8), which drops you right outside the club’s entrance. Very convenient if you’re arriving dressed like a glittery centaur or dominatrix zombie nurse.
If you’re coming from Kreuzberg or Friedrichshain, it’s a quick cab or e-scooter ride. Just remember to hold onto your latex accessories, Berlin wind is no joke.
Most partygoers arrive by public transport or on foot.
Parking is scarce and generally a pain in the arse, especially on Saturday nights. Plus, you don’t want to drive home after a night at KitKat. Trust me on that one.
The KitKatClub Dress Code
“Do I have to dress up for the KitKatClub?”
You’ll certainly feel more at ease if you do.
KitKat’s door policy is legendary, and not always in a good way. Let’s get one thing straight: this is not the place to rock up in cargo shorts and hope for the best.
The official dress code is: “particular, sexy, wicked, kinky, creative, eccentric or crazy… but never boring.” Which basically means: go wild or go home.
No effort = no entry. They’ve turned away footballers, influencers, and probably a few minor royalty.
Here’s a quick cheat sheet:
- ✅ Latex, harnesses, corsets, masks, themed costume, nudity, full kink regalia.
- ❌ Jeans, suits, regular clubwear, sneakers, “I’ll just see what happens.”
Obviously, check the specific event listings.
Maybe there’s a denim gangbang coming soon, but we somewhat doubt it.
