Want to know more about sex in Hungary?
This landlocked central/eastern European country is home to 9.8 million people and entertains 21.4 million tourists each year. A former socialist state, Hungary is a newcomer to the western world but has played catch-up pretty quickly; in fact, Hungary surpasses other European nations when it comes to areas such as legislation on pornography and prostitution.
In this guide, we take a look at the sex industry in Hungary as well as explore what Hungarians think about porn, sex and diversity. We also give you some places you could try to hook up with some locals to get a better taste for Hungarian life.
Sex in Hungary
Since communism fell to democracy in 1989, Hungarians have been embracing the Western world. Visitors to this former Eastern Bloc country are often surprised by how familiar the cities look.
When it comes to sex Hungarians are progressive and liberal-minded with the authorities very much embracing the economic benefits that the industry can offer the country. Not only are porn and prostitution legal but the population in general is largely very tolerant of the sex trade and the country celebrates diversity.
On the whole, the Hungarians enjoy a good sex life with the majority having sex at least once a week. Three in four reportedly always (or almost always) have an orgasm during intercourse and 60% of people were reported as being satisfied with their bedroom activities.
The same survey gives us some other stats:
- 8% of Hungarians masturbate 2-3 times a week with 40% using porn to do so.
- 35% of Hungarians have had casual sex during the past 12 months.
- The average number of sexual partners in Hungary is 7 with almost 5% of those surveyed having over 50.
- The average age for the first sexual encounter for a Hungarian is 17.
In a survey conducted in 2011, Hungarian men were found to have the longest penis length in Europe with an average of 16.51cm (6.5”).
Sex education in Hungary is considered comprehensive and covers the human body, drugs and sexually transmitted diseases. Delivered by health care professionals as well as teachers, the curriculum appears to need some attention as Hungary’s teenage pregnancy rate is 18 per 1000 women (aged 15-19) which is one of the highest in Europe but lower than the US (21 per 1000). Conversely, the rate of STIs in Hungary is considered quite low with the prevalence of HIV being one of the lowest (1.6 cases per 100,000 – the UK has a rate of 10).

Adult Industry in Hungary
The adult industry in Hungary is a relatively new one which developed after the fall of communism in the late 1980s. The combination of the new democratic government’s liberal legislation and cheap production costs thrust the country into a prominent position as one of Europe’s leading producers of porn.
Unlike the mainstream markets dominating at the time, the performers in Hungarian porn made a welcome change to the augmented bodies and Hollywood looks of American porn stars.
One of the first pioneers in the country is claimed to have been the French producer (and former actor), Christoph Clark who moved to Hungary in 1991. Founding the adult studio, Euro Angel, Clark started distributing additional material under the company name, Evil Angel.
As Hungarian porn became more popular, the porn stars began adopting more Western European names and actresses like Michelle Wild, Monique Covet, Nikki Anderson and Mya Diamond are all big superstars on the international stage but all hail from this small nation.
The female actresses specifically have gained a reputation from other European studios for being more open-minded and willing than stars of other nationalities. This attitude means they receive more consistent casting and more international exposure.
Proportionately the country’s porn industry is one of the most productive in Europe and represents around 0.5% of the country’s GDP (€636 million per year).
Studios like Euro Angel, Diamond Pictures and LUXx Video contribute to the estimated annual release of around 100 feature length porn films. Though this is lower than the peak of a decade ago when three times as many movies were being made in the country, Hungary still lays claim to being one of Europe’s porn capitals.
Prostitution Laws in Hungary
Hungary is one of only eight countries in Europe where prostitution is fully legalised and is regulated by the government. Paying for sex and selling sex were decriminalised in 1999 and the law requires sex workers to pay taxes.
Prostitutes must work for themselves and pimping or running brothels is not legal. If taking to the streets to find work, they must only do so within designated zones and maintain a distance from both schools and churches. The local authorities are required to provide clearly marked red-light zones in which prostitutes can work as long as there is a public demand for their services. However, in many areas of the country, authorities deny the need for a specific zone and prostitutes find themselves working in non-designated zones, where they risk receiving a fine.
Whilst brothels aren’t legal, there are premises where organised prostitution goes on with most being considered in a ‘grey area’ of the law. In Budapest alone, there are an estimated 150 apartments that run brothel like services.
It is thought that around 20,000 prostitutes work in Hungary with around 7000-9000 of these operating in Budapest. Many of these women are not operating legally and do not report their earnings to the authorities. However many women are paying taxes, the prostitution industry in Hungary is estimated to be worth around €850 million per year.
Porn Viewing Trends
The popular adult tube site, PornHub, regularly publishes insights into the porn viewing trends of a nation with Hungary last being analysed in 2014. At the time of the report, Hungarians were most likely to be searching for porn containing these keywords:
- Aleska Diamond
- Hungarian casting
- Lisa Ann
- Madison Ivy
It’s no surprise that home-grown, Hungarian favourite, Aleska Diamond takes the prime position but local ladies, Michelle Wild and Aletta Ocean also made the top twenty list of searched porn stars. Other famous names being searched on PornHub from within Hungary include Kim Kardashian, Asa Akira and Brandi Love as well as (bizarrely) Miley Cyrus!
Interestingly, a higher proportion (on average) of women view porn in Hungary with the global percentage being 23% whilst Hungarian women account for 27% of traffic to their site.
According to Alexa, PornHub is the most visited porn video site in Hungary and is ranked at number 30 in the country’s top 50 websites by traffic. The adult site receives more traffic than IMDB, Reddit and Twitter.
Other adult sites of note on the traffic list, include:
- Bonga Cams (24th most visited site in Hungary)
- PornHub (30th most visited site in Hungary)
- XHamster (38th most visited site in Hungary)
- Live Jasmin (42nd most visited site in Hungary)
- XVideos (47th most visited site in Hungary)
- Txxx (49th most visited site in Hungary)

LGBTQ in Hungary
Rights for the LGBTQ community in Hungary are a mixed bag with some areas being progressive and liberal whilst others aren’t as forward-thinking. Homosexuality has been legal in Hungary since 1961 though the equalisation of the age of consent didn’t happen until 2002 (reduced from 20 to 14, in line with heterosexuals).
Like many countries in Europe, same sex relationships are recognised in law but same-sex marriage has been constitutionally banned.
Legislation for adoption by same-sex couples does not exist and one partner in a same-sex relationship may not officially adopt their partners birth children. IVF is also not available for lesbians though single women may access this facility.
Gays and lesbians may serve openly in the military.
Transgendered individuals may change their legal gender but may not serve in the armed forces.
Hungary has been ranked 49th out of 120 countries on the Gay Happiness Index (a metric put together by PlanetRomeo to assess the experience of gay men living in different areas of the world.
Overall, Hungarians are tolerant of diversity in sexuality and gender but just 39% of the public support a change in the law for same-sex marriage. Freedom from discrimination in general (since 2003) is largely enshrined in law but further work is needed by LGBTQ activists to achieve the same liberties enjoyed by their communities across other parts of Europe.
