Prostitution in Italy is legal though third-party activities relating to the sale of sexual services (such as brothels, pimping or prostitution rings) is not.
Brothels were prohibited in the late 1950s and though many still exist under different guises, you can’t find a traditional running house like you can in other parts of Europe.
Prostitutes (known colloquially by the term ‘lucciole’, or ‘fireflies’) tend to work as independent escorts or privately in rented accommodation. Some work for agencies, take to the streets or even work as dancers in strip clubs and massage parlours. Though the trade in sexual acts in these venues is prohibited it can and does take place. However, you should be aware that the owners of these establishments do not tolerate such activity as it can lead to site closure.
Street prostitution is tolerated as long as no explicit soliciting takes place and is a popular way for locals and tourists to engage the services of a professional.
Migrants to the city who have a valid work or residents permit can perform sexual services.
The cost of hiring a prostitute in Rome varies considerably. Migrant street prostitutes can charge as little as €30 whereas escorts charge an average of €150 per hour.

Brothels are illegal in Italy but you may still find yourself in one if you respond to an in-call advertising from some site, particularly classified listings.
These small networks of prostitutes tend to rent premises on a short-term basis and move frequently to avoid detection from the authorities. This kind of operation is not regulated and are not recommended in general.
Swinging Clubs
Swinging is very popular in Italy and you can find clubs around Rome as a single man or as part of a couple. Not all of these clubs are open to the general public though most will permit international visitors; however, you may need to pay a joining membership fee.
Clubs are generally busier on weekends with the action starting after 11.00pm (though most open their doors earlier).
Bad Romance
Via Beniamino Franklin, 3a, 00153 Rome
Bad Romance is a members only swinging club open for singles and couples in the Testaccio area of the city. You can gain membership by contacting the owner, Alessia Rossini via the website.
The club is populated mostly by local residents with only one foreign couple per ten being admitted.
Despite being set in a traditional 1900s brick building, the interior is an eclectic mix of ultra-modern facilities and stylish turn-of-the-century elegance. Facilities include plenty of private and public play spaces, a dark dance floor and a medieval style dungeon room.
Entrance includes a free bar with self-service being the order of service. The dress code is encouraged to be classy.
The club is open as follows:
- Monday to Thursday: 10.30pm to 3.00am
- Friday and Saturday: 10.30pm to 4.30am
- Sunday: Private parties from 9.30pm to 2.00am
New Armony Club Prive
Via Concordia 44, 00100 Rome
Located in the San Giovanni area of the city, the New Armony Club is a Parisian style club prive that has been running for 15 years.
It’s not the most upmarket of entrances nor the most modern of swinging clubs but the action is almost entirely local, so you are almost guaranteed to be swinging ‘Roman’ style. They are an ASX affiliated club and you will need to enrol before you can play.
Facilities are basic but clean and you can find gloryholes, a disco and bar as well as several play zones.
The club is open daily from 10.00pm.
Flirt Club
Via Cassia Veientana SR2 snc, 01015 Sutri VT
Flirt is an exclusive and luxurious swingers club located about an hour’s drive north of the city. You can book a guest suite to stay overnight and the travel is worthwhile for the experience alone. Guests who stay over can enjoy the hospitality of the clubs services until 3.00pm the following day. Facilities include the heated indoor naturist swimming pool and full breakfast.
You can book a taxi service from the city for a cost of €60 (per trip).
Membership is a must for all guests and costs €35 for an annual access card. Entrance fees for events vary depending on the day, whether you are a single or couple and your age; guests under 35 pay less than those over 47. Generally, couples can expect to pay around €50 with single men paying €100. Guest rooms cost extra.
The complex is large and includes sumptuous interiors and well appointed play areas for guests to enjoy. In the summer, the venue opens its naturist village where guests can enjoy the expansive and beautiful grounds just as nature intended.
There is a great restaurant on site along with bar and nightclub.

New Luna Club

About 4km to the north east of the city you can find the New Luna swinging club.

La Chance Club Prive
Via Jacopo Passavanti, 69, Rome
Situated on the outskirts of the city this Club Prive is a members only venue that welcomes both couples and singles.
Covering 450 sq m, La Chance has several couples’ rooms, a group play area as well as gloryholes, bar, disco and adult cinema. Couples’ rooms may only be used by three (or more) people at a time in private with the door having to be open when used in a pair.
This swinging club is open Thursday to Saturday from 10.30pm to 4.00am (3.00am on Thursdays).
Villa Ghibli

The first swinging club in Italy with an all-female management team, Villa Ghibli is a members only venue that welcomes international guests.
Situated around 40km from the city, the club has a naturist village and relaxation spa to entertain guests. There is an indoor and an outdoor pool in addition to wet and dry play areas.
Individuals are charged at €80 each with couples being free except at the weekends when fees of €20 apply.
The club is open Wednesday to Sunday from 2.00pm.
Terme Club Prive
Via Roccalumera 5/7, 00132 Rome
Operated by the same team that owns the Olimpo chain, Terme Club Prive is a 1500 sq m swinging spa 21km to the east of the city.
As well as the usual spa facilities you can also enjoy massage whilst in the club but you are reminded that sexual services are not offered by their masseurs.

Elite 2

After the closure of the Boite Pigalle nightclub in Downtown Rome, a new entertainment establishment was created in 2006 with the opening of Elite 2 on the same site.
Just a short walk from the Trevi Fountain, this stylishly modern strip club offers plenty of room inside.
Serving cocktails the main bar is well positioned so you don’t miss any action whilst waiting for your drinks or you could enjoy a lap dance in one of the leather silver sofas. Private rooms are available.
The club is open Monday to Saturday from 11.00pm to 4.00am.
Blue Night

Blue Night is located about half an hour’s drive east of the city, just off the SR5 on the way to Tivoli.
A large club with a big bar and regular fanbase, the dancers cavort in an electric and modern setting.
An evening’s entertainment at Blue Night includes feature shows with regular artists as well as guest performers including porn stars. You can also enjoy lap dances whilst you watch the acrobatic and strip tease entertainment.
They hold regular events including the popular Roma Sex festival where many international stars perform.
Club Paradise
Via Lanciano, 56, 00156 Rome
Situated about 10km outside of historic Rome, Club Paradise is a popular strip venue for locals.
It’s not the biggest club on the list and the set-up is pretty traditional (semi-circular seats around a mainstage) but the dancers have a good reputation and the bar staff are pretty friendly.
The main bar and stage is dimly lit with some neon lights and much of the action takes place on a pole with some lap dancing. Private rooms are available and are basic but modern.
Club Paradise is open Monday to Saturday during the afternoon and evening from 4.30pm to 7.45pm and 9.30pm until the early hours.
Sex Spas
Olimpo Therme

Street Prostitutes
Street prostitution in Rome is a very popular way of picking up a prostitute for locals and tourists and the city caters well for the high demand. It should be noted that it is legal to procure sex off the streets but that it is illegal for women to solicit. It is also illegal to have sex in public so picking up a street prostitute should include a budget for room hire (she may have an apartment). Many hotels take a dim view of street prostitutes and sex in your car is likely to land you in hot water.
Though largely tolerated by the authorities, many of the residents of Rome are not so liberal and would prefer to see street prostitution either prohibited or regulated in certain areas.
Despite the high demand for sex on the streets there is no official red light district in the city.

Originally a traditional cinema the Blue Moon Shows has been open since the 1970s though changed to its current format in 1985. Offering burlesque and variety performances with featured artists (including porn stars), the shows are still performed in a cinema stage setting.
